The synthesis of natural substances is one of the research areas of Nuno Maulide and his research group at the Institute of Organic Chemistry. This also includes the production of structurally related compounds that nature cannot produce. The researchers have now succeeded in producing two novel analogues of the natural substance quinine, an active substance against malaria. These have a higher activity against malaria pathogens than previously used drugs. The results are currently published in the renowned journal "Angewandte Chemie".
