Title: Topological Molecular Carbons

Prof. Jishan Wu, Department of Chemistry, National University of Singapore, Singapore

Prof. Wu will discuss the synthesis, electronic properties, and material applications of molecular carbons with well-defined edge structures and topologies.1 He will focus on how the edge structure affects the electronic properties of graphene-like molecules, particularly their open-shell diradical character.2 Additionally, he will also introduce new synthetic strategies toward topologically chiral carbon nanobelts and nanohelicenes.3

Prof. Jishan Wu received BSc degree in chemistry from Wuhan University (1997), MSc degree from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2000, with Xianghong Wang and Fosong Wang), and PhD degree from Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research (2004, with Klaus Müllen). He conducted postdoc study in the University of California at Los Angeles (2005-2007, with Sir Fraser Stoddart) and then joined the Department of Chemistry, National University of Singapore (NUS) as an assistant professor in 2007. He was promoted to a full professor in 2017. In recent years, his group has done intensive research on open-shell singlet diradicaloids, 3D global aromaticity, and topological molecular carbons. He holds more than 350 publications, which total citations over 27,000 (H index: 82 based on Google Scholar). He has received 20+ awards including the NUS Young Investigator Award (2007), Singapore Young Scientist Award (2010), NUS Young Researcher Award (2012), NRF Investigatorship (2019) and Andrews Lectureship (2024).
