New Research platform for comammox bacteria approved

08.12.2017

The Rectorate of the University of Vienna has recently approved four new research platforms for 2018. Among them is the "Comammox" research platform led by Holger Daims and involving the Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Center for Molecular Biology and the Research Network Chemistry Meets Microbiology.

"Comammox" bacteria are a recent discovery of microbiologists Michael Wagner and Holger Daims together with international colleagues. Comammox perform nitrification much more efficiently than other microbes and thus have great potential, e.g. for the purification of wastewater in sewage treatment plants and for the treatment of drinking water.
